Copyright

A copyright is a property right in an original work of authorship that is fixed in tangible form. The work is fixed when it is in a form that is permanent or stable to permit it to be perceived, reproduced, or otherwise communicated for a period of more than transitory duration.

Copyright protection extends to works of authorship which comprise the following: literary works; musical works, including any accompanying works, pantomimes and choreographic works; pictorial, graphic and sculptural works; motion pictures and other audiovisual works; sound recordings; architectural works and computer software.

A copyright gives the holder the exclusive rights of reproduction, adaptation, public distribution, public performance and public display. For individual authors the term of copyright is life plus seventy years. For works made for hire, the copyright term is seventy-five years from the year of first publication or one hundred years from the year of creation, whichever expires first.

A copyright is not infringed by fair use which may include criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship or research.
